Ibn Sina (Avicenna): The Father of Modern Medicine

Ibn Sina's Canon of Medicine was the primary medical textbook of European universities for over five centuries. He established clinical trials, quarantine, the germ theory of disease, and the separation of pharmacology from medicine, achievements that Western medical history attributes to figures who came centuries later.

Who He Was

Abu Ali ibn Sina (980–1037 CE), known in the West as Avicenna, was a Persian polymath: physician, philosopher, mathematician, astronomer, and poet. He wrote over 450 works, of which around 240 survive. He is considered the father of modern medicine.

What He Did

The Canon of Medicine: Ibn Sina's al-Qanun fi al-Tibb (The Canon of Medicine) was a five-volume medical encyclopaedia that synthesised Greek, Persian, and Islamic medical knowledge into a comprehensive, organised system. It was translated into Latin in the 12th century and became the primary medical textbook of European universities from the 12th to the 17th century, over five centuries of continuous use. It was published more than 35 times in Europe during the 15th and 16th centuries alone.

Clinical trials: Ibn Sina described systematic methods for testing medicines: using control groups, testing on multiple patients, distinguishing between the effects of the drug and the effects of the disease. This is the earliest documented description of clinical trial methodology.

Quarantine: Ibn Sina understood that some diseases were transmitted through contaminated soil, water, and air, and recommended isolating patients to prevent spread. He recommended a 40-day isolation period: the origin of the word quarantine, from the Italian quarantina meaning forty days.

Germ theory: Ibn Sina proposed that bodily secretions could contaminate soil and water and recommended that water be boiled and soil be avoided. This preceded the formal germ theory of disease by centuries.

Pharmacology: He separated pharmacology from medicine as a discipline, establishing it as an independent field of study.

Philosophy: He developed Avicennian logic, the concept of the tabula rasa (blank slate), and the floating man thought experiment, a precursor to Descartes' cogito ergo sum.

A Note on His Philosophy

Ibn Sina's philosophical system drew on Aristotelian categories that classical Islamic theologians including al-Ghazali and Ibn Taymiyyah criticised for departing from Islamic revealed theology on matters including God's knowledge of particulars and the eternity of the world. His medical work is unambiguous; his philosophy requires scholarly care.

The Western Appropriation

The Latinisation of his name (Avicenna) erased his identity in European academic culture. For five centuries, European medical students learned from a Latin translation of an Arabic text by a Muslim polymath while the curriculum named the source as "Avicenna", a name that gave no indication of its Islamic origin.

When European medicine began developing its own institutions and methods in the 17th and 18th centuries, the Islamic foundations on which it had rested for half a millennium were progressively backgrounded. The clinical trial methodology described by Ibn Sina was attributed to later European researchers. The quarantine concept was documented as an Italian invention. The germ theory was credited to Pasteur and Koch in the 19th century.

Common Misconceptions

"Modern medicine was developed in Europe." Modern medicine's foundational textbook for five centuries was written by a Muslim scholar in 11th-century Persia. The clinical methodology, quarantine practice, and pharmaceutical framework of European medicine were inherited from Islamic medicine.

"Avicenna was a European or secular scholar." Avicenna is the Latinisation of Ibn Sina, a Muslim Persian scholar. The Latinisation was precisely what erased his identity from the European academic tradition that depended on his work.
