Al-Khwarizmi: The Father of Algebra and Algorithms

Every time someone uses the word algebra or algorithm, they are unknowingly invoking a 9th-century Muslim mathematician from Baghdad. Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi's work transformed mathematics and became the foundation of European mathematical education for four centuries.

Who He Was

Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi (c. 780–850 CE) was a Persian mathematician, astronomer, and geographer who worked at the House of Wisdom in Baghdad under the Abbasid Caliphate. He is one of the most consequential mathematicians in human history.

What He Did

Algebra: Al-Khwarizmi's Kitab al-mukhtasar fi hisab al-jabr wal-muqabala (The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing, c. 830 CE) was the first book to treat algebra as an independent mathematical discipline. The word algebra comes directly from al-jabr in the title. The book presented systematic methods for solving linear and quadratic equations, methods that became the foundation of European mathematics for centuries.

Algorithms: Al-Khwarizmi wrote a separate treatise on Hindu-Arabic numerals and arithmetic. When it was translated into Latin in the 12th century as Algoritmi de numero Indorum (Al-Khwarizmi on the Hindu Art of Reckoning), his Latinised name became the word algorithm (now one of the most important concepts in computer science).

Hindu-Arabic Numerals: His work was the primary vehicle through which the decimal number system (including the zero as a placeholder) spread from India through the Islamic world to Europe. The abacus-based arithmetic that European mathematicians used before this was replaced by al-Khwarizmi's system.

The Integrative Function

Al-Khwarizmi drew on Indian mathematical traditions (including the numeral system he helped transmit westward) and synthesised them with Greek and Persian knowledge. This integrative function is itself one of Islamic civilisation's most significant contributions.

The Western Reception

Al-Khwarizmi's Al-Jabr was translated into Latin by the English scholar Robert of Chester in 1145 and became the principal mathematical textbook of European universities until the 16th century. Every European student who learned algebra for four centuries did so from a Latin translation of a Muslim mathematician's Arabic text.

The word algebra in every European language comes from his title. The word algorithm in every language comes from his name. These are not disputed; they are etymologically documented. The debt is literally written into the vocabulary.

What Was Obscured

Al-Khwarizmi is now reasonably well-known, and his contributions are generally acknowledged in mathematical history. The erasure operated more subtly: by the time his work had been absorbed into European mathematics, the Arabic origin was treated as a historical footnote rather than the foundation it was. René Descartes and other European mathematicians who built on algebraic methods rarely acknowledged that the discipline they were extending had been created by a Muslim scholar working in 9th-century Baghdad.

Common Misconceptions

"Algebra was invented by the ancient Greeks." Diophantus worked on number theory and some algebraic problems, but al-Khwarizmi was the first to treat algebra as an independent, systematic discipline. The MacTutor History of Mathematics at St Andrews notes that al-Khwarizmi is more entitled to be called the father of algebra than Diophantus.

"Algorithm is a modern computer science term." It is a modern computer science concept, but the word itself comes from the Latinisation of al-Khwarizmi's name in a 12th-century translation of his 9th-century work.
