Ibn Nafis and Ibn Zuhr: Anatomy and Surgery Before Europe
Ibn Nafis discovered pulmonary blood circulation 300 years before William Harvey, who is credited with the discovery. Ibn Zuhr pioneered experimental surgery and clinical medicine in 12th-century Andalusia. Both were absorbed into European medicine without acknowledgement.
Ibn Nafis: Pulmonary Circulation
Ala al-Din Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Abi Hazm al-Qurashi al-Dimashqi, known as Ibn Nafis (1213–1288 CE), was a Syrian physician working in Cairo. In his Commentary on Anatomy in Avicenna's Canon, he described the pulmonary circulation of blood (the pathway through which blood travels from the right side of the heart to the lungs and back to the left side) with complete accuracy.
He explicitly rejected Galen's theory that blood passed directly from one side of the heart to the other through invisible pores in the septum, a theory that had been accepted for over a thousand years. He described the pulmonary artery, the function of the lungs in oxygenating blood, and the return pathway to the heart.
William Harvey is credited with discovering pulmonary blood circulation in 1628, 350 years after Ibn Nafis's description. The discovery of a manuscript of Ibn Nafis's commentary in 1924 revealed the prior description. Whether Harvey had access to Ibn Nafis's work through Latin translations or intermediary texts remains a matter of historical debate.
Ibn Zuhr: Surgical Methodology
Abu Marwan Abd al-Malik ibn Zuhr (1091–1161 CE), known as Avenzoar in the West, was an Andalusian physician who pioneered experimental surgical methodology. He was the first to describe pericarditis, mediastinal tumours, and pharyngeal paralysis, and he conducted dissections and animal experiments to understand anatomy before performing procedures on human patients.
He identified the parasitic cause of scabies, a discovery not confirmed in European medicine until the 19th century. He pioneered the use of nutritional therapy and tracheotomy.
The Pattern
Both men's contributions were absorbed into European medicine through Latin translation and subsequent European scholarship. The Latinisation of their names (Avenzoar for Ibn Zuhr) removed the indication of their origin. Harvey's discovery was presented as original precisely because the history of Ibn Nafis's prior description was not available in Western academic culture until a manuscript was found in Berlin in 1924.
Common Misconceptions
"William Harvey discovered blood circulation." Harvey described systemic circulation. Ibn Nafis described pulmonary circulation 350 years earlier with complete accuracy. Harvey's contribution was significant, but it was not the first accurate description of blood's pathway through the heart and lungs.
"These are just claims by Muslim apologists." The Ibn Nafis manuscript was discovered in Berlin in 1924 by the Egyptian physician Muhyo al-Din al-Tatawi. The prior description is documented in the primary source, not in retrospective attribution.
