The Expanding Universe
The Quran states that the universe is being expanded. This was not a known scientific fact until Edwin Hubble's observations in 1929, over 1,300 years after the revelation.
The Verse
In Surah al-Dhariyat (51:47), God says:
"And the heaven — We built it with power, and We are its expanders."
The Arabic word used is musi'un (from the root wasa'a), meaning to expand, to widen, to make vast. The verse does not say the heaven was built large. It says it is actively being expanded.
The Scientific Confirmation
In 1929, Edwin Hubble demonstrated through observation of galactic redshift that the universe is not static but is actively expanding in all directions. This became one of the foundational discoveries of modern cosmology and was later confirmed by the cosmic microwave background radiation.
The idea of an expanding universe was not part of any scientific, philosophical, or theological framework before the 20th century. Greek cosmology assumed a static, eternal universe. Medieval Islamic and European astronomy inherited that assumption.
The Significance
The Quran does not say the sky is large, or that God made it vast at the beginning. The present-tense construction musi'un (we are expanding it) describes an ongoing process. That is precisely what cosmology now confirms: the expansion is not historical, it is continuous and accelerating.
Common Misconceptions
"Musi'un just means vast, not expanding." The root wasa'a carries the active meaning of making something wider or more spacious as an ongoing act. The present-tense construction is deliberate and significant.
"This is a coincidence or a vague match." The specific claim (ongoing expansion of the universe) was not part of any pre-modern cosmological model. It is not a vague description that could fit multiple interpretations.
