Medieval & Early Modern

The reconquista was not merely a political transition. It was a centuries-long campaign of forced conversion, massacre, and expulsion that eliminated the Muslim population of the Iberian Peninsula. The Inquisition enforced it. The Moriscos (Muslims who had converted to Christianity) were expelled anyway in 1609.

The Crusades were a series of religiously sanctioned military campaigns launched by Christian Europe against Muslim populations in the Levant, North Africa, and Iberia. Their legacy: the massacre of civilian populations, the destruction of cities, and the long-term militarisation of Christian-Muslim relations, shaped the world we inhabit.

The Mongol invasions of the 13th century destroyed the most advanced civilisation on Earth. The sack of Baghdad in 1258 ended the Abbasid Caliphate, burned the House of Wisdom, and killed between 200,000 and 800,000 people. The Islamic world did not fully recover for centuries.

The Safavid dynasty imposed Twelver Shia Islam on a predominantly Sunni Persian population by force, massacring Sunni scholars and communities and destroying the Sunni Islamic heritage of one of the great centres of Islamic civilisation.

Russia's expansion into Muslim-majority territories from the 18th century onward was accompanied by massacres, forced displacement, and systematic cultural suppression that eliminated or decimated Muslim populations across the Caucasus and Central Asia.

The narrative of WWI and the Ottoman collapse focuses on the Armenian genocide. The simultaneous massacres of Muslim populations across the Balkans and Caucasus (which preceded it by decades and killed millions) are almost entirely absent from the historical record taught in Western schools.

France occupied Algeria from 1830 to 1962. The occupation began with the systematic massacre of the Muslim population, continued through decades of land dispossession and cultural suppression, and ended with a war of independence in which between 300,000 and 1.5 million Algerians were killed.

Italy's occupation of Libya from 1911 to 1943 was accompanied by systematic massacre, the use of poison gas, and the internment of the Libyan population in concentration camps. Umar al-Mukhtar (the Sanussi scholar and resistance leader) was hanged publicly in 1931 as a warning to the population.

Following the 1857 Indian uprising, British forces conducted systematic reprisals against the Muslim population of Delhi: executing scholars, destroying mosques, and demolishing the physical infrastructure of Muslim civilisation in the city that had been the seat of the Mughal Empire.

Between 15% and 30% of the enslaved Africans transported to the Americas were Muslim. They were stripped of their religion, their names, their languages, and their identities through systematic forced conversion, prohibition of Islamic practice, and the destruction of any means of maintaining Muslim community life.

Evidence suggests Muslim presence in the Americas before Columbus and possible contact with Aboriginal Australia before European colonisation. Where Muslim communities existed among indigenous populations, colonial powers systematically erased them, along with the indigenous cultures they had integrated with.

Christian missionary activity in Africa was inseparable from European colonialism. In Muslim-majority and mixed regions, it served as a vehicle for erasing Islamic identity, supporting colonial administrative structures, and producing African elites disconnected from their Islamic heritage.

The Chinese state is conducting a systematic campaign against the Uyghur Muslim population of Xinjiang: mass internment, forced labour, cultural erasure, surveillance, and demographic engineering on a scale that multiple governments and human rights organisations have described as genocide.

Between 1992 and 1995, Bosnian Muslim civilians were subjected to systematic massacre, rape, and ethnic cleansing by Serbian forces while European governments watched and United Nations peacekeepers stood aside. Srebrenica was the worst massacre on European soil since the Second World War.

The Rohingya are a Muslim minority in Myanmar who have been rendered stateless by law and subjected to systematic massacre, rape, and expulsion by the Myanmar military. The 2017 campaign was described by UN investigators as genocide. Buddhist nationalist ideology drove it.

In February 2002, following the burning of a train carrying Hindu pilgrims, anti-Muslim pogroms swept the Indian state of Gujarat. Between 1,000 and 2,000 Muslims were killed, over 150,000 displaced, and mosques and Muslim properties systematically destroyed, with documented police complicity and the state government's failure to intervene.

The post-2003 reshaping of the Middle East produced the deliberate destruction of functioning Sunni Muslim states and communities through a combination of American military force, Iranian proxy expansion, Russian military intervention, and the Assad regime's campaign against its own population.

The dispossession of Palestinians has been accompanied by documented mass killings, from Deir Yassin in 1948 to Sabra and Shatila in 1982 to the repeated campaigns in Gaza. These are not disputed; they are documented by Israeli, Palestinian, and international investigators.

Kashmir has been disputed since 1947. The Muslim majority population of the Kashmir Valley has been subjected to decades of Indian military occupation, documented human rights abuses, and since 2019, the revocation of its autonomy and a demographic engineering project designed to change the Muslim majority.

Since 2013, anti-Balaka Christian militias have conducted systematic killing and expulsion of Muslim communities in the Central African Republic, reducing the Muslim population of the capital from 15% to near zero. The international response has been minimal.
